🌟 The Art and of the Perfect Spray Tan
A professional spray tan is an art! It's the safest way to achieve a gorgeous, sunkissed look. Our custom solutions ensure a natural color that complements your skin tone, but success requires preparation and discipline.
The Science: The Role of DHA
Spray tan solutions contain Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a colorless sugar derivative. The magic happens when DHA reacts safely with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin (the stratum corneum). This reaction, is called the Maillard Reaction, and produces the beautiful brown pigments (melanoidins) that give you your tan. Since this reaction only happens on the outermost layer of skin, it is completely safe and temporary, fading as your skin naturally exfoliates.
The Essential Do's: Maximizing DHA Adhesion and Development
DO Pre-Tan Prep (24 Hours Prior)
All shaving, waxing, manicures, pedicures, and aggressive exfoliation must be done at least 24 hours before your session. This strict timing is scientifically necessary. Aggressive exfoliation, waxing, and shaving all cause the pores to expand and disrupt the skin's surface integrity. Allowing 24 hours gives your pores time to constrict and your skin's natural pH to stabilize. Applying solution to expanded pores can lead to the DHA settling unevenly, causing a 'dotting' or speckled appearance, while unstable pH can impair the Maillard Reaction.
DO Choose the Right Cleanser
Achieving a perfect, streak-free spray tan starts long before you step into the booth, and your choice of body wash is the most crucial part of preparation. To ensure the DHA develops flawlessly and lasts, you must create a clean, residue-free, and ideally pH-balanced canvas. Avoid traditional bar soaps, heavily fragranced, and creamy washes like Dove or Olay. The Science: These products are often high in alkaline pH and contain heavy oils (lipids) that leave an invisible film on the skin. This lipid barrier physically blocks the DHA from coming into direct contact with the amino acids in the stratum corneum, which inhibits the Maillard Reaction. Instead, we recommend using clear, gel-based, sulfate-free, and pH-balanced cleansers—such as Cetaphil Ultra Gentle, CeraVe Hydrating Body Wash, or specialized prep cleansers like Norvell pH Balance Shower Cleanser. By choosing a product that rinses cleanly, you ensure your skin's natural pH is optimized for maximum, even absorption, leading to a golden glow instead of a patchy mess.

The Critical Don'ts: Protecting Your Investment
DON'T Apply Barrier Products
Avoid applying heavy moisturizers, deodorant, or perfumes right before your session. The Science: Any oil, lotion, or antiperspirant creates a non-permeable barrier on the skin, physically preventing the water-based DHA solution from penetrating the outermost skin layer. Deodorant, in particular, can create a noticeable green tint in the underarm area due to a distinct chemical interaction between the DHA and the active ingredient, often aluminum.
DON'T Break the Development Window
If your formula requires 8 hours to develop, stick to it. Absolutely no water exposure (washing hands, tears, rain, sweating) until the first rinse. The Science: The Maillard Reaction requires time to complete. Introducing water prematurely stops the reaction immediately, causing the DHA to wash away in those areas, which results in drips and streaks.
DON'T Forget Aftercare Hydration
For extending the life of your gorgeous spray tan, hydration is non-negotiable, but the type of moisturizer you choose is critical. Focus on simple, deeply moisturizing lotions that are free of common tan-destroying ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum, alcohol, and any exfoliating agents (AHAs, BHAs, or Retinoids). The Science: These ingredients either create a slick barrier that accelerates the tan's wear-off (mineral oil/petrolatum) or, in the case of acids and exfoliants, they chemically accelerate the natural process of skin cell turnover (desquamation). Since your tan exists only on the surface layer, hastening exfoliation equals hastening the tan's demise. Your best bets are dedicated Tan Extenders like Norvell Prolong Color Extender or simple, pH-balanced formulas such as CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion or Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. Consistent use of these gentle hydrators will keep your skin supple and allow your tan to wear off gradually and evenly, maximizing its longevity.
🚿 Handling the First Rinse: The Post-Tan Rule
The First Rinse
After your designated development time (typically 8 hours, or as instructed by your technician), your very first shower is critical. The Science: The purpose of this first rinse is to wash away the temporary cosmetic bronzer—the brown guide color—that was in the solution. This bronzer is not your actual tan; your actual tan is the color produced by the DHA reaction that has completed on your skin. Use lukewarm water and avoid soap entirely, or use only a tiny bit of your safe body wash in necessary areas (like underarms). Do not use washcloths, loofahs, or excessive friction. You will see a lot of brown wash off—this is normal! The water should run mostly clear by the time you step out. Pat your skin gently with a soft towel; never rub.
Post-Rinse Hydration and Swimming
Once the cosmetic bronzer is gone, the focus shifts entirely to maintaining the skin's moisture balance.
Hydration is Key: Apply your recommended simple, oil-free moisturizer (like CeraVe or Aveeno) twice daily. The more hydrated the stratum corneum (the tanned layer), the slower and more evenly the skin cells will shed.
The Swimming Risk: Minimize exposure to chlorine and heavily salted water. The Science: Both chlorine (a strong chemical) and high salt content act as exfoliating agents, aggressively stripping moisture and accelerating the breakdown of the tanned surface cells. This often leads to noticeable patchiness and a drastically reduced tan life. If you must swim, keep sessions short, rinse immediately with fresh water afterward, and apply lotion liberally.
By mastering the science of preparation and the discipline of aftercare, you ensure your professional spray tan wears beautifully and fades naturally, extending your sunkissed look for as long as possible.
